How Are Things Going?

February 5, 2008

Well, Adam is finished with his first round of chemo and began his second round today (Tuesday).  His reactions to the first round were not atypical and the doctors said he actually tolerated the high dose chemo fairly well compared with others.  Nausea and hiccups ( a side effect of one of the medications) were his major battles.  As his white cell count dropped, he did run a fever and spent several days in the hospital where he could be carefully monitored.

Doctors don't expect this round of chemo to be significantly different.  They have adjusted his medications in hope that they can avoid the hiccups that plagued him with the first round.  In additon to beginning the second round of chemo, Adam had a bone marrow test yesterday (Monday).  When I last spoke with him he was still waiting for those results.

Aside from the chemo, Adam is excited to be back in Fort Collins and looking forward to getting back to his school work.  CSU has been phenomenal in working to develop an independent study plan that will allow him to continue his education while undergoing treatment.

As soon as I hear the results of the bone marrow test I will get them posted.

Adam,
I am the Mom of Zachary, a 14 year old bilateral RB survivor. He was diagnosised at the age of 3 months. He lost his left eye at age 4. His right eye is mostly blind. Like you, he doesn't let his lack of vision stop him. He wrestles, Ski's, rides his bike, is a good student. I saw your story on the news tonight and I want you to know that i'm praying for you. I'm on a Retinoblastoma support group online and I will link them to your story, hopefully someone has an idea of a good treatment plan. We have members from all over the world. And some of the members have access to some of the best RB docs in this country. I will see what I can do. Meanwhile, keep that wonderful attitude and give your parents a big hug from me!
